Fifty years ago: Sickness absence resistance

Many doctors in industry make little or no attempt to study sickness absence, and the subject, despite its major economic importance, is one that is often considered as dull or unrewarding. This attitude is rationalized by the contention that the work involved is laborious and expensive, and sickness rates tend to be much the same from 1 year to the next. This short paper attempts to show that records which allow analysis of frequency distributions together with a study of men who appear to show a resistance to sickness absenteeism can be valuable in revealing the reasons for such behaviour. This in turn can provide indications how sickness absences may be controlled.
