In this issue of Occupational Medicine

Ageing workforces with less young entrants have prompted countries to better support workers with chronic disease(s) to manage these conditions in the workplace. Wynn’s editorial [1] highlights the 2 million people in the UK who live with or have survived cancer. The number of cancer survivors has doubled since 1970 and is expected to increase by 3% per year. Supporting them returning to work and dealing with the long-term or late effects from the condition or its treatment calls for new skills, evidence-based tailored functional rehabilitation programmes and new specialized roles like that of the ‘oncological occupational physician’. The rapidly changing organization and demographics of work poses specific challenges to provision.
