The new contract recently imposed by the UK government on junior doctors working in the National Health Service (NHS) in England led to an unprecedented industrial dispute. The focus of the contract was to move towards providing routine hospital services 7 days a week which the government argued would address poorer outcomes for patients admitted to hospital at weekends. The British Medical Association (BMA) disputed the statistics used by the Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt to justify the claim of a so-called ‘weekend effect’. They also argued that the contract was unfair to doctors and would be a threat to patient safety. Professor Philip Tucker discusses the two sides of the argument in an editorial in this issue [1].
