The study is intended to examine how the size of a building influences on the frequency of ignition for various property use: office, store, warehouse, factory, etc., and to compare the results with those obtained from abroad. To do so, fire statistics data from year 1995 to 2003 were analyzed to obtain first the distributions of floor area of the building of fire origin for different building uses. A bimodal model consisting of two independent lognormal distributions was confirmed to represent very well floor area distribution of buildings of fire origin. The same model also fits the distribution of floor area of various buildings at risk in Japan whose information is obtained from questionnaires in the Corporate Survey of Buildings (CSB). The size vs frequency of ignition relationships were compared with those obtained from foreign researchers.
