In this issue of Occupational Medicine

With an increasingly diverse labour force and rapidly changing work environments, understanding the bi-directional relationship between work and health is as important as ever. The adverse effects of shift and night work have received significant attention in recent years. Aside from an increased risk of involvement in accidents, there are concerns about the development of early cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Practical recommendations, however, about how to address these difficulties seem lacking. In this issue, McElvenny et al. [1] discuss the evidence base supporting the association between shift work and cancer and describe some practical workplace interventions that may be introduced to positively modify this risk at organizational and individual level.
