In this issue of Occupational Medicine

In this issue, we celebrate the life of an inspirational woman Professor Alice Hamilton [1]. Alice was not only a pioneer for women in medicine, being the first female professor at Harvard Medical School, but she was also a staunch feminist who was an advocate for equality for all. She lived among immigrant workers in Hull House, an early social housing scheme set up by Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams. While observing her fellow residents she linked public health with working conditions and from then on strived for change, helping to develop trade unions and social welfare programmes. Alice lived a long and varied life but continued to campaign for social justice as well as occupational health and safety until she died. She would have been delighted to know that the Health and Safety at Work Act 1970 was passed in the USA just months after her death. Alice set the scene for workplace research by interviewing workers at their workplace, a methodology we still use successfully today.
