Abstract

This paper presents a 3D finite element model to analyse the thermo-mechanical behaviour of dovetail timber joints under standard fire exposure. The mechanical model of timber is based on Yamada-Sun failure criterion and continuum damage mechanics (CDM) theory. The thermal model considers the classical heat transfer and temperature-dependent properties of material to predict the charring rates and evolution of temperature fields. The thermo-mechanical model is validated by comparing the fire resistance and displacement-time curves with experimental results. Novel numerical failure criterion based on the kinetic energy-time curves were proposed. The numerical models show a good capacity to simulate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of dovetail timber joints under fire exposure.
