Fatigue in workers in safety critical jobs is becoming an increasingly important issue. The psychological and physiological effects of fatigue were examined in an in-depth review by Lock et al. [1]. They found that there is a large body of evidence showing strong associations between fatigue and reduced cognition and increased occupational accidents. They concluded that fatigue risk mitigation strategies should be implemented to reduce the risks in employees of safety critical industries and such measures require improved acute fatigue mitigation, as well as the prevention of cumulative fatigue build-up. Noone and Waclawski [2] consider the need for fatigue risk management systems in healthcare with the effects of fatigue particularly prevalent in junior anaesthetists and in trainee physicians driving home from work.
